Visual Art Specialist | Spotswood Primary School

Cindy Asp

Board member from May 2023 – present

Cindy Asp is the Visual Art Specialist at Spotswood Primary School (SPS). Over the last 18months Cindy’s role has extended to teaching Visual Art and Wellbeing. Cindy feels fortunate to be teaching both programs to young children, as she believes together, they help reduce anxiety, increase self-esteem, foster self-discovery, and provide a sense of community and connectedness.

Cindy holds a Bachelor of Arts in Textile Design from RMIT, where she majored in printing making and worked as a textile designer for Stafford Group. She completed a Bachelor of Teaching through Melbourne University and started her teaching career as a classroom teacher. During Cindy’s time at Spotswood PS, she has worked with an Artist in Residence in developing and creating a Sonic Cubby House. She has collaborated with local artists on creating Shadow Puppets for the Art Industry Festival, as well as local school collaborations exhibiting works, and creating projects for the Glow Festival, Art in Public Places run through Hobsons Bay City Council.

As an art educator at SPS Cindy wanted a way to share with families and the wider community all the creative goodness happening in the art room, and so she created an Instagram account where she could stay active, connecting, sharing ideas and resources with families and art educators from across the world.

Away from work, Cindy likes to paint with watercolours and inks. She is drawn to all things that light can filter through and working with this translucent medium is a type of meditation for her. Cindy works under the name of Skep Studio and sells originals and prints of her work.

As a strong supporter of the Visual Arts, Cindy recognises the value of facilitating exchange between Art Educators, artists and the wider community. This exchange not only promotes the continued growth and development of the Arts but also creates a sense of community and belonging. Cindy is looking at connecting, contributing, and building this network through ArtEdVic.
