Rona Green Tattooed Self Portrait Workshop for Teachers | BAG

Wednesday 26 July 2017, 4–6.30pm

Bendigo Art Gallery

In this fun and interactive Professional Development session, teachers will meet, enjoy wine and refreshments and hear the artist present the ideas in her exhibition Rona Green: Champagne taste and lemonade pockets. This will be followed by an exciting hands-on workshop focusing on creative self-portraiture. Teachers will gain inspiration from the exhibition as well as other contemporary artists and work from mirrors to create a self-portrait that they will embellish with tattoo designs inspired by reference material supplied. Ideas for development with students of different ages will be discussed.

About the exhibition and artist:
Tattoos, science fiction, B-grade movies and secret societies –  this is the fodder of Rona Green, an artist renowned for her prints and paintings of anthropomorphic characters.  Champagne taste and lemonade  pockets presents a menagerie of identities drawn from the last decade of Green’s printmaking practice. Adorned with the tattoos and uniforms of archetypal gangsters, urban legends and ‘Aussie’ stereotypes, Green creates a fantastical world where dogs postulate as standover men, cats become villainous masterminds and rabbits are fierce cyber warriors. Funny, charming and habitually disturbing, Green’s work highlights the link between social and cultural identity and matters of power, value systems, and ideology.

Rona Green is a La Trobe University Bendigo graduate and is currently based in Melbourne, where she is represented by Australian Galleries, Melbourne and Sydney, Beaver Galleries, Canberra and Solander Gallery, New Zealand.

Exhibition dates: 24 June – 4 September 2017
