MPRG | Visual Thinking Strategies PD

Working with Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) facilitator Carly Grace, workshop participants will be guided through VTS discussions in response to the work of contemporary Australian artists represented in MPRG exhibition In the Valley, part of CLIMARTE’s ART+CLIMATE=CHANGE 2019 exhibition program.

VTS is an enquiry-based approach to experiencing art through careful, close looking and questioning, empowering students to discuss art based on what they can see in an artwork.

The goal of VTS is not to teach the history of a work of art but rather to encourage students to observe independently and to back up their comments with evidence through dialogue with their peers.

Through practical VTS demonstrations in the gallery, participants will learn about the key components of this strategy and how to use Visual Thinking Strategies to engage students in focused looking and deep thinking about visual art.

Participants will gain insight into how VTS can be used to make meaningful connections with contemporary Australian art and how VTS pedagogy connects directly to the Victorian Curriculum, developing students’ capabilities for Critical and Creative Thinking.

Victorian Curriculum Levels: 5 – 9
