This Wednesday there is a free one-day symposium presenting new perspectives on the National Gallery of Victoria’s Art School: Academia and Bohemia: New Perspectives on the National Gallery School Federation Hall, Grant Street VCA Wednesday 21 June, 2017 10:30am - 6:30pm You are invited to hear a group of experts, including Michael Varcoe- Cocks, Professor Catherine Speck, Dr Stephen Mead, Dr Bronwyn Hughes, Alex Ellem, Associate Professor Alison Inglis, Annelies Van de Ven, and David Belzycki, discuss different aspects of the history of this remarkable Art School, focusing on its early years from 1867 to World War One. Many luminaries of Australian art history were students or teachers at the School during this time – including Eugene von Guerard, George Folingsby, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Jane Sutherland, Frederick McCubbin, Bernard Hall, Rose MacPherson (Margaret Preston), Hugh Ramsay, among others. The links between the National Gallery School and Melbourne’s lively bohemian culture will be a major theme of the symposium, with the keynote lecture on the famous “9 by 5 Impression Exhibition” of 1889 being presented by Terence Lane, an acknowledged expert in this field, and former Senior Curator of Australian Art at the National Gallery of Victoria. After the keynote address, from 6.30-7.30 pm, there will be refreshments in the Margaret Lawrence Gallery at the VCA, with Fiona Gruber in conversation with Elizabeth Gower, and a viewing of 9 X 5 NOW Exhibition. Oil and water don't usually mix, which was part of the trick in this technique. Exploiting the drying time of the oil paint and build on the image with watercolour and guache paints.

Day One | Teacher as Artist (2017 Unconference) also celebrating the 150th birthday of Victorian College of the Arts (VCA)

Delegates attending this workshop explored pattern and geometry in structured but creative approach. Thank you so much Elizabeth for giving your time, education in Victoria will be better for it.

AEV Councillors Jes Simson and Kate Coleman led a session on Design Thinking to ensure the day was meaningful and valuable to the education setting. This intense session powered through the design process to give delegates something less theoretical and more practical ideas to take away from the day.

In this 'Drawing Bootcamp' Richard pushed the physical limits of the delegates to aid a fresh approach to art making and thinking. It turns out sketching on one leg isn't as easy as it looks. Everyone brought their sense of humour to get the most of the session.

Jon shared techniques that shaped his practice and provided feedback to inspire delegates to push into new territories.

Hannah shared about her process and exploration of dust as a medium. Her talk was charming and gave an insight into the macro world and its transient nature.

We headed over to the NGV to hear from Susie May who gave us an entertaining insight into the David Hockney exhibition.

Art Education Victoria's first Conference as a working council. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to such a fantastic day.

Kiron led the group on a photography trip of the local area followed by a feedback session in the photography lab.

The doors were closed for the life drawing session, Phoebe managed to get a few shots in the break. Delegates taking the opportunity to appreciate form and improve their observational skills in the Life Drawing workshop.
