Students and educators from a range of schools and year levels explore the theme of Reconciliation through classroom learning and workshops.   The program included the Kaleidoscope—an applied learning experience across the curriculum, ‘Our cultural landscape’ which involved rotating activities at Geelong Gallery, Geelong Performing Arts Centre, Geelong Regional Library Corporation and Koala Clancy Foundation.

These special workshops celebrated National Reconciliation Week, which acknowledge and build on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians. These learning activities are presented by local Aboriginal artists, and works created by students will be presented in the exhibition. 

The program provided students with the opportunity to explore and express their own creative responses to Reconciliation, building a breadth of knowledge and understanding of the culture and history of the people both past and present and in doing so actively promote positive attitudes and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Over the past 7 years schools have participated in Geelong Gallery’s Let’s talk recognition—a children’s art exhibition project. Some with artists in schools and others through the Kaleidoscope program―an applied learning experience across the curriculum.

In 2017 we will have many schools completing similar programs; we are excited to say we are presenting our second online program as part of the project with support from Virtual Learning Team, Learning & Teaching Branch of Department of Education & Training.

The Virtual session will be on the 14th of March 2017 from 1:30 until 3:00. It is suitable for History, Visual Arts, and English Victorian Curriculum areas for levels 3-6.

Gavin Couzens will be presenting the Geelong Gallery workshop in our Kaleidoscope Let’s talk recognition—a children’s art exhibition which explores the drawings and symbols of the local Wathaurong people your students in this workshop will be offered the same opportunity:

This session will include:

• What is Reconciliation Week? A brief introduction to Country/Place of the Wathaurong (Wadda-Warrung) people by Gail Frost—Geelong Gallery educator to explore cultural knowledge, beliefs and practices of the Wathaurong people.
• A hands –on workshop with Gavin Couzens to create artwork using symbols and designs in the Wathaurong peoples style, these designs can then be posted to Geelong Gallery after the workshops to be presented in Kaleidoscope mural, which forms part of the Let’s talk recognition—a children’s art exhibition.

***To participate, you will need to have ready at your school:

• 300gsm smooth water colour paper (a set design shape will be sent on confirmation of your registration, this design will need to be cut from the paper for each student participating)
• Coloured water soluble makers for each work table.
