Professional Development for Educators: Design for Life: Grant and Mary Featherston | Heide MOMA
In this program, educators will explore the exhibition, Design for Life, to gain insight into the theory, practice and processes of Australian modernist design as manifest in the work of Grant and Mary Featherston.
Participants will be guided through the exhibition by Dr Denise Whitehouse, Featherston expert, historian, writer and former design academic.
Denise will discuss Grant and Mary Featherston’s shared vision that design should benefit all, and how they campaigned for professional, aesthetic and environmental standards. She will also outline their experimentations with plastics as the means of producing beautiful, affordable design, and show the influences on and evolution of Featherston furniture.
Sketches, specification drawings, blueprints, prototypes and promotional material are displayed alongside original furniture, presenting the entire design process.
After viewing the exhibitions, participants will be convene in the Sidney Myer Education Centre for morning tea and a Q&A session with Denise on how to incorporate aspects of the exhibition into a Design curriculum.
The program also provides the opportunity to network with other teachers, and create mini furniture prototypes from paper – an art-making activity that can be easily transferred to the classroom.
