Art for students with Vision Impairment Professional Development | BAG

Michael Donnelly, artist and art educator, will present a hands-on workshop and seminar exploring options, strategies and issues related to working with blind and low vision students. Helen Attrill, Education Officer at Bendigo Art Gallery will demonstrate the new programs and materials on offer for people with vision impairments at the gallery, including those funded through Creative Victoria’s Engaging Audiences Grant.

Explore information on setting up or adjusting your art or classroom to better accommodate your students, issues of access to the visual arts, specialist techniques, budget options and opportunities for “hands-on” art making. Participants will explore works of art under a blindfold, investigating the use of visual description, tactile diagrams and touch access. Learn about how Bendigo Art Gallery is making art more accessible to all visitors, including students with vision impairments.

Michael Donnelly
Michael Donnelly was an art teacher at the RVIB / Vision Australia School in Burwood for 11 years, teaching students who are blind or have low vision. Michael teaches art in the Support Skills Program at the Statewide Vision Resource Centre (SVRC) in Donvale and is a Visiting Teacher – Vision Impairment for NWVR (Metro). He has presented at conferences and runs many workshops on art, art access, and vision impairment.


Helen Attrill
Helen has worked at the gallery for 22 years and is renowned for developing exciting and relevant Professional Development programs catering for teachers from all over Victoria. She is excited to be developing programs for students with special needs.
